The Australian National Brooch Show 2019 Opening and Try & Buy, Sunday 5 May
Opening Review by Cressida Fox
This year’s Australian National Brooch Show officially opened on Sunday 5 May, with its popular “Try & Buy” event, where visitors can try on the artworks.
Visitors arrived as soon as the doors opened, and were soon trying on brooches, using the display mirrors supplied. This exhibition is kindly supported by City of Yarra, so we were especially pleased that three City of Yarra staff attended the opening: Cr Danae Bosler, Mayor; Cr Jackie Fristacky, Nicholls Ward; and Brona Keenan, Visual Arts Officer.
CAS President Robert Lee announced the opening of this exhibition of 329 works by 73 artists, and introduced the Mayor, Cr Danae Bosler, to speak. She acknowledged the huge amount of work that these shows take to organised, and the work of all involved.
Our volunteers, all brooch artists themselves, were kept busy assisting customers to try on brooches. A small crowd of around 30 people milled around the cases. People had fun viewing and discussing the brooches, queueing up to try them on and deciding what they would buy, then to purchase their new treasures to take home with them that day - for themselves or as presents for others.
The Australian National Brooch Show 2019 is on at Fitzroy Library till 9 August.
