Robyn Becker

What part of the process of creating art do you like best?
I most enjoy the lack of control – how the clay guides my hands in directions I didn't anticipate.
What is your working environment like?
It is informal – I don't have a separate studio so I use the areas of my home with the best light and ambience.
What kind of (formal & informal) art training have you had?
I have a Diploma of Visual Arts (Ceramics) and I've done a number of short courses in drawing and painting.
How has your art training affected the kind of art you produce?
The training has provided the technical knowledge I need to work with clay, with a greater awareness of artists & art around the world. And last but not least, it has guided me to the philosophical platform which now guides my own creativity.
Name some important influences and inspirations in your art career.
The work of local artists such as the aboriginal artist Rover Thomas; international artists Cy Twombly, Isamu Noguchi, and Richard Diebenkorn has been very inspirational. My TAFE lecturer Shane Kent has had a significant impact on my work.
What has been the most difficult thing you have encountered in your work?
Not having a proper studio, with a full sized kiln! For work to keep flowing, this is a necessity. Also, I have lots of ideas – turning them into finished objects can be a real challenge.
Have there been major turning points in your art career?
I hope this year will be one – as I focus more on my art as opposed to fitting it in around other demands.
What has been the highlight of your art career?
I was chosen as one of the finalists for the "FRESH" awards at Craft Victoria in my graduate year.
Artist comment about “Baobab Sisters (three)”
I have a continued fascination with Baobabs. They reach up to the universe but are solidly connected to the earth. Striving like me but grounded and nurturing. I believe that all living things are connected; we thrive or suffer because of the actions of others. When I create these baobabs, I consider how they will relate to each other and how they can express their individuality. And I think of our planet.
